New York Giants Domenik Hixon Injured At Training Camp

June 17, 2010- By Jonathan Lowell

The New York Giants have been dealt and early blow in their campaign for the 2010 NFL championship. Wide receiver and return specialist Domenik Hixon was injured in training camp Wednesday and could be out for the year.

The receiver was participating in the punt return team’s first practice when he made a sudden cut, tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.  The new Meadowland’s stadium turf was not able to support Hixon’s move, and the return man collapsed in pain.

It was originally diagnosed as a hyper extended knee, but an MRI revealed the tear in the knee.  Hixon is scheduled to undergo surgery on the knee in two to three weeks.  The recover time could extend through the regular season.

Head coach Tom Coughlin made comments earlier that blamed the turf for the injury.  Later, he and general manager Jerry Reese retracted those statements.

“It just happened, just a freak thing that happens sometimes in sports and we have to deal with it,” Reese said during a team workout. “I was looking right at him, and it didn’t look like his foot got caught. It looked like he was kind of weaving a little bit and his knee just buckled a little bit. It can happen right here on this grass field.”

The new turf has been in question since the Giants first reported to team activities earlier this off-season.  The team’s star defensive end Justin Tuck said the turf was softer than in the past, and that it would take some time for players to adjust.

The New York Jets began their practice on the new turf, and veteran linebacker Bart Scott had some concerns.  He suggested several events that could help make the turf ready for the regular season

“It’s new turf — it takes awhile for this stuff to harden up and mat down,” said Scott. “There’s always going to be loose rubber until you run over it a couple times, have some soccer games in here, some high school games to help mat this thing down. But you just have to make the adjustment. Early on you may have to go with shorter spikes and then as it hardens up you can go with longer spikes.”

Possible replacements for Hixon in the offense include Mario Manningham, Sinorice Moss, and Hakeem Nicks.  The Giants will look to players Antrel Rolle and Chad Jones to replace Hixon on the special teams unit.
