Roger Federer, Serena Williams Top Seeds At 2010 Wimbledon Tournament

June 16, 2010- By Jonathan Lowell

Roger Federer has been set as the No. 1 overall seed at the 2010 Wimbledon tournament at the All England Club.  Rafael Nadal was seeded second in a reversal of their ATP rankings.

It came as no surprise when it was announced that Serena and Venus Williams would be seeded No. 1 and two respectively in the women’s draw.  Their seeding was in line with their WTA world rankings, unlike the men.

Federer is the defending men’s champion at Wimbledon after a historic final match against American Andy Roddick at the 2009 tournament.  Nadal did not participate at Wimbledon last year due to a recurring knee injury.

Wimbledon referee Andrew Jarrett explained the flip-flop of seeding and world ranking for the top two men in the world.

“While the seeding positions of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are reversed from their current rankings, there is no practical effect since they remain the leading seeds in their respective halves of the draw,” Jarret said after the rankings were released.

Roddick, who is currently ranked No. 7 in the world, has been set as the fifth seed.  The American has participated in the final at Wimbledon three times, losing each time.  The four-time champion at the Queen’s Club looks to finally get over his Wimbledon final losing streak, and win the tournament for the first time in his career.

Nadal earned the world No.1 ranking after winning the French Open at Roland Garros.  Federer was bounced in the quarterfinal at that tournament by Robin Soderling.  Nadal won his first Wimbledon title in 2008 against Federer.  It was the first time Nadal had won two Grand Slam finals in a row, after he finished the victor at the French that year.

Soderling has officially been set as the sixth seed in the tournament scheduled to begin June 21.  The Swede has been having one of his best years individually after reaching the final at the French Open this year.  He has not participated in any of the traditional Wimbledon warm-up tournaments.

The women’s seeds stuck to their respective world rankings for the most part.  The first four seeds in the tournament are the top four players in the world.  Francesca Schiavone, the world No. 6 ranked woman, is set as the fifth seed after her victory at Roland Garros.  The world No. 5 Elena Dementieva has withdrawn from the tournament due to injury.

USA sportsbooks have set Federer as the favorite to win the 2010 Wimbledon tournament at 3/2.  He is followed closely by Nadal and Brit Andy Murray at 5/2 and 9/1 respectively.

The favorite to win the women’s draw is Serena, and her line has been set at 9/4.  Her sister Venus is second in odds at 9/2, and the third favorite is Justine Henin at 7/1.

SWEET JUSTICE THAT ROGER FEDERER IS SEEDED NUMBER ONE HERE. HE DESERVES NUMBER ONE. PLUS, NADAL IS ONLY JUST 120 POINTS AWAY FROM NADAL IN THE ACTUAL SEEDINGS. OF COURSE, ROGER IS THE ODDS ON FAVORITE TO WIN HIS 7TH WIMBLEDON AND TIE SAMPRAS FOR WEEKS AT NUMBER ONE AND SEVEN OVERALL WIMBLEDONS. IF HE DOES WIN HE WILL HAVE 17 MAJORS, MORE THAN ANYBODY EVER. I CAN SEE HIM WINNING AT LEAST 25 MAJORS BY THE END OF HIS ILLUSTRIOUS AND RECORD-BREAKING CAREER. GO ROGER!!!
