WSOP Rookie Carter Phillips Grabs Gold Bracelet

June 11th, 2010- By Bryan Cross

2010 World Series of Poker rookie Carter Phillips made his mark on the tournament by winning his first WSOP bracelet at Event No.16, a $1,500 buy-in featuring a field of 1,663 players with a purse of over $2.2 million.

Phillips was among those featured in ESPN The Magazine in a article that highlighted rookie players at the 2010 World Series of Poker.

With his win, Phillips collected the $482,774 first-place prize money and was elated following the event.

“It’s 10 times more exciting that anything I could have imagined,” said Phillips after his win. “After I turned 21, winning a bracelet was my main priority. I was playing a lot in Europe before I turned 21. I won an EPT event in Barcelona in September [2009]. But winning something on my home turf means much more.”

The 21-year-old from North Carolina has only been on the professional poker scene for just over a year, but has already tabbed $1.8 million in earnings.

“I did not start playing poker until I turned 18,” Phillips said. “I studied the game really hard. I spend an enormous number of hours playing online. Playing got me a lot of experience. There are a lot of good online training sites. Also, the biggest thing is talking with friends — that’s mainly how I have gotten better is talking with friends and discussing hands.”

Event No.16 at the 2010 World Series of Poker could also be referred to as the battle of the young-guns, as it was the second youngest combined age final table in World Series of poker history.  The average age of the final table was under 23 years old, with 26 year-old Hugo Perez being the oldest player.

In total, there were 162 players that finished in the money, with Samuel Gerber finishing in second place and Craig Bergeron finishing third, ahead of Perez who came in fourth.

As the 2010 World Series of Poker continues, many events are still to be played as players try for the coveted WSOP bracelets and top prizes in the tournaments.
