Broncos Confirm, Then Deny Kyle Orton’s Trade Availability

May 23, 2010 – John Ritter

The dynamic of drafting Tim Tebow has been monetarily successful for the Denver Broncos so far, but is beginning to hinder one vital issue.

What to do with Kyle Orton?

According to ProFootballTalk, the Broncos have been confusingly vague about their current-starting quarterback, sending smoke signals about his availability as of last week. Per the Denver Post, Denver “let it be known” that Orton was available via trade, although he is clearly the top choice for starter next season.

But a conflicting report has recently been floated that the Broncos have had no such discussions, and plan on keeping Orton around in 2010.

“Kyle Orton Has NEVER been available or discussed. Ever! Period,” one source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

It would behoove Denver to say both because while it is clear Tebow is the heir-apparent, and Orton is gaining less leverage by the day, he will still likely be the starter in 2010 and would need to be satisfied to perform.

He was good in ’09 with 3,802 and 21 touchdowns, but not terrific. And he has continued to stay positive on the matter, according to teammates.

“If you want to be a successful quarterback in this league, you’ve got to have that about yourself,” said wideout Brandon Stokley. “You can see that [Orton] has it. You can see he’s more comfortable this year, as well as we all are, being in this system for a year.”

Many expect Tebow to be a two-year project, meaning Orton is their best option if the Broncos expect to contend for an improving AFC West crown. Top wideout Brandon Marshall is gone, and starting running back Knowshon Moreno is only coming into his second season.

As they stand right now, Josh McDaniels’ bunch is a 50/1 favorite to win the NFL title, according to Bodog, with those odds shifting depending on their quarterbacking situation.
