Houston Texan LB Brian Cushing Suspended, AP To Re-vote On Defensive ROY

May 11, 2010  Jonathan Lowell

NFL defensive rookie of the year Brian Cushing was suspended four games last week after he failed a drug test for performance enhancing drugs.  Cushing failed the test in September 2009, and was not notified that he would be suspended until February of this year.  The Texan linebacker will serve his suspension at the beginning of next year.

Though Cushing maintains that he did not take a steroid, the drug is still banned under the league performance-enhancing policy.  The substance he tested positive for has not been released.

The former USC standout was a unanimous winner of the award.  The voters on the award are 50 broadcasters and sports writers who cover the teams and the league.  Out of the 50 possible votes, Cushing received 39, his closest competition coming from Buffalo Bill’s defensive back Jairus Byrd with six.

Cushing was also voted to the league’s All-Pro team.  After garnering  five votes, the linebacker received second team honors.  The All-Pro team will also be subjected to a re-vote.

At the 2009 NFL Draft Cushing was bombarded with questions concerning rumors he was a performance-enhancing drug user.

“I’ve passed every drug test out there and still have, ” Cushing said during his press conference at the draft.  “I’m not that kind of guy.”

The Houston front office released a statement last week that bemoaned the loss of their linebacker, but still remained confident about the team they will field in 2010.

“We were disappointed to learn that Brian has been suspended for the first four games of the 2010 season,” said Houston general manager Rick Smith. “Brian is a productive member of our team and this is a significant loss, but we have to be prepared to win without him.”

The Texan’s owner, Robert McNair, also expressed his disappointment in the player and the league.  “The club is left completely out of the loop on that,” McNair said. “We’re not even notified, it’s the league and the player and the players’ union. All we know is what’s been announced at this point in time.”

The suspension means that Cushing will not be eligible for any awards next season including player of the week/month, any team awards, or post season honors.  He is, however, still eligible to win the award that might be stripped from him because of the re-vote.  He will also be eligible to remain on the All-Pro team should the writers chose to select him.

USA Online Sportsbooks have the Texan’s odds of winning Super Bowl XLV at 25/1 with, or without Cushing.  After the Texan’s first winning season, the absence of their star linebacker will definitely be felt.
