April 15th, 2010 – by Glen

In under a week’s time, the NBC National Heads Up Poker Championship will premier on television. On April 19th, beginning at noon, the heads up competition will finally air, having taken place between March 5th and March 7th.

Sixty-four players met at the felts, duking it out one on one in order to determine who is worthy of the title of champion, as well as the $500,000 dollar top prize. The field was full of big names, including young stars such as Tom Dwan, Joe Cada, and Dario Minieri to some of the older pros, including Eli Elezra, Michael Sexton, and Johnny Chan.

Though the bracket has already filled out, and all winners were determined in early March, fans can tune in and watch some of the biggest names in poker meet at the tables. With such a field of bubbling personalities, including Phil Hellmuth and Mike “The Mouth” Matusow, the televised event will be entertaining, as well as educational.

Though primarily an invitational event, the Heads Up Poker Champion does take online qualifiers from some of the best USA poker rooms.

The ultimate winner of the event was Annie Duke. Having battled her way through Andrew Bloch, Darvin Moon, Paul Wasicka, and Jerry Yang, Duke managed to over poker Eric Seidel in the best of three finals.

The televised series will run in the same time slot for six consecutive weeks, at which time the event will culminate. As sponsored by NBC, the games will air on this channel. Coming only once a year, those who enjoy heads up poker will want to tune in before the games are gone. Otherwise, there is only High Stakes Poker, Poker After Dark, and WPT events to enjoy in the world of televised poker.
