No Charges Will Be Filed Against Ben Roethlisberger

April 12th, 2010-  By Bryan Cross

There will be no charges filed against Pittsburgh Steeler quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, following an accusation by a 20-year-old female college student that alleged he sexually assaulted her at a club in Milledgeville, Ga.

Fred Bright, the District Attorney publicly stated the new developments on Monday.  The Ocmulgee Circuit District Attorney said that the evidence presented in the case was not sufficient to warrant a conviction beyond a reasonable doubt, and the accuser did not want to proceed with charges.

“Therefore there will be no arrests made nor criminal prosecution against Mr. Roethlisberger,” Bright said in a statement.

Roger Goodell, the commissioner of the NFL said the he will schedule time to meet with the Pittsburgh quarterback soon, reports ESPN NFL analyst Chris Mortensen.

Back on March 5, a woman said to police in Milledgeville, Ga that she was assaulted by Roethlisberger at a nightclub called Capital City.  Roethlisberger was out with a group of friend for his 28th birthday celebration.

The quarterback owns a home roughly 30 miles from the town of Milledgeville.

During the investigation, Bright stated that the accuser was proved to be extremely intoxicated on the night in question, where her and her friends in a sorority had come across Roethlisberger earlier in the night at a different location.

The group of women joined Roethlisberger and his friends in the VIP section of the Capital City night club, where the quarterback ordered a round of shots, and proceeded to follow the accuser into the bathroom.

“We are not condoning Mr. Roethlisberger’s actions that night,” Bright said in a statement. “But we do not prosecute morals. We prosecute crimes.”

The investigation lasted several weeks, despite a letter written by the accuser asking for no charges to be pressed.

“I know when I have a case and I know when I don’t,” Bright remarked. “And I do not have enough evidence to convince 12 jurors beyond a reasonable doubt that Mr. Roethlisberger was guilty of rape.”

This was the second incident in 12 months brought for against Roethlisberger.  Another woman alleged that the Super-Bowl-winning quarterback raped her at a hotel in Lake Tahoe back in 2008.

He is currently being sued by the woman, with the case still ongoing.

Roethlisberger has not been present in the voluntary workouts with the team, but should be there for training camp following the results of Monday.

The Steelers missed the playoffs last season, and are installed by USA Online Sportsbooks as a contender to win Super Bowl XLV.
