Florida Next in Line To Consider Legal Online Poker

January 30th, 2011 – by Glen Farmer

Whether or not online poker could be considered legal has been left up to the states, according to a federal ruling in the courts. Several states, most notably New Jersey, have considered legalizing limited forms of gambling, particularly online poker, but now it seems that Florida is also on the way to offering legal online poker.

The issue took prominence due to the fact that Florida legislators have been searching for ways to clear the state’s ailing budget. While Las Vegas style casinos have been considered, they may not come about – if approved – for a number of years. An easier to implement form of gambling would be found in online poker rooms.

The current rendition of the law would authorize horse, dog, and jai-alai locations to offer their own form of online poker room. The state would receive a cut of the revenue.

“It’s common sense,” began Florida Representative Joseph Abruzzo (D-Wellington). “There are hundreds of thousands of players in Florida in unregulated and unprotected offshore sites. Why not legalize, regulate, and bring in revenue from something that’s already occurring?”

Florida’s gambling industry already has poker as a legal game in pari-mutuel facilities, while home games are also legal.
