Darlington County Sheriffs Bust Major Illegal Gambling Operation

January 25th, 2011 – by Glen Farmer

The possibility of relaxed restrictions on gambling has been on the horizon for South Carolinians, but a recent bust may complicate the legislation.

On Saturday, the Darlington County Combined Drug Unit busted an illegal organized gambling operation. The bust entailed the seizure of computers, cars, and over $180,000, in liquid cash. Four cars had been taken, as had various computer equipment.

The gambling equipment that had been confiscated included poker chips, poker tables, and cards, indicating that this illegal gambling den was an illegitimate poker room. Whether or not other types of gambling were taking place in the gambling den has not been released.

In the raid, 30 people received citations for unlawful gambling and betting, which is a misdemeanor that entails a fine of up to $500 dollars.

The main culprit is alleged to be Jimmy Miller, 44, of Darlington. Miller was charged with operating a gambling house. His crime could ultimately yield a sentence of up to two years imprisonment, with a $2,000 fine also a possibility.

Miller has already been released on a bond of $1,000 dollars. The investigation has not yet ceased.
