Legislature Introduced To Bring Table Games Into Maryland

January 16th, 2011 – by Glen Farmer

When Maryland’s newest casino opened, many gamblers shrugged it off due to the fact that it exclusively houses slot machines. The lack of table games has made many would be players continue to do their gaming in nearby states that have table games, notably Pennsylvania and Delaware.

In order to combat people leaving the state, Senator Kathy Klausmeier (D-Baltimore County) introduced a bill on Friday in the first week of the current legislative session. Klausmeier stated that she supports legalizing table games, including blackjack and poker, in order to compete with surrounding states.

Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey and several other states in the North Eastern U.S.A. have legal table games, which have been a main reason for players to visit their casinos rather than the slots only gaming centers in Maryland.

Whether or not the measure would pass is another question entirely. Governor Martin O’Malley has previously stated that he was not going to push for table games when asked about the idea during his campaign last year. To further complicate the matter, Maryland voters would be forced to approve the proposal in a referendum.
