A gambling webmaster in South Korea has been charged for crimes associated with illegal activities on the Internet. It has been alleged that the suspect, who has been named simply as Lee, was arrested for launching multiple denial of service attacks against rival gambling sites.

Lee, 32, was arrested along with an accomplice, named only Park, who had allegedly helped him in the hacking. Park, 37, participated in a series of denial of service attacks between the 21st of November and the 15th of December in 2010.

According to reports, the attacks were allegedly authorized and supported by an organized crime organization run by local gangsters. Lee’s firm reportedly hosted the sites operating the gambling venues, which were controlled by the gangsters in question.

In addition to Lee and Park, four alleged members of the Incheon crime organization.

Prosecutors have claimed that the criminal enterprise rented 50,000 compromised computers in order to stage the attack. These compromised computers, called a botnet, are computers who have been injected with a trojan horse virus that allows a foreign user to take control and use the computer from a remote location.

The denial of service attacks were against rival gambling websites. The motive behind the attacks was to reduce competition in order to bring players back to the site operated by those doing the attacks. The major attacks take place during world-wide sports events.
