Antonio Esfandiari Wins Second WPT Title

December 9th, 2010 – by Glen Farmer

Going into the final day of the World Poker Tour’s Five Diamond Poker Classic, Antonio Esfandiari held a middle of the road chip stack. He had some tough competition, including the lovely Vanessa Rousso, Andrew Robl and John Racener, but Esfandiari managed to plow through his opposition and take a WPT Title – all on his birthday.

Esfandiari went into the day in fifth place, but this would not last long. It took about 40 hands before Esfandiari would begin regaining chips, but once he gained the momentum, he quickly began to climb the charts.

Ted Lawson was the first to be eliminated, in this case by Vanessa Rousso, but Esfandiari would take several big pots from Kirk Morrison to hamstring this opponent. Esfandiari began to catch up, and ultimately surpassed Vanessa Rousso.

Andrew Robl, both friend and opponent to Esfandiari, kept climbing in chips, however. The two would ultimately come to heads up play, with Vanessa Rousso eliminated in third place shortly after John Racener hit the rail.

Vanessa Rousso was taken down by Esfandiari on the 123rd hand of the night. Rousso shoved all-in from the button for about 1.95 million chips, and Esfandiari called from the big blind. Rousso flipped Qh-2h, while Esfandiari had her crippled with Ac-Qs. The board ran blanks, and Rousso was sent home by the birthday boy.

It took over 2 hours, but a back and forth battle between Esfandiari and Robl ended with Esfandiari going home $800,000 richer, and wearing a new WPT bracelet.
