Newly Elected Ohio Governor To Content With Gambling Issue

November 29th, 2010 – by Glen Farmer

In 2009, Ohioans voted to yes on a ballot issue that would authorize four casinos in the state. Progress on the issue had been limited, and the Ohio government had not been able to fully establish a regulatory body for gambling in the state.

The election of governor-elect John Kasich has prompted several questions over the realization of gambling in the state of Ohio. Kasich has not yet stated how much he will be covering the gambling issue in the state, though it is likely that he will soon come to the issue due to the taxes that can be generated as well as the people’s demand.

In addition to the creation of a casino control commission, Kasich will likely have to determine the legalities of slot machines, dubbed video lottery terminals, in the multiple racetracks around the state. Kasich has also been fairly quiet when it comes to the establishment of racinos, and has been quoted at saying “Let’s see what the courts say.”

The 2009 proposal over the lottery operated slots would have put up to 17,500 slots in the racetracks around the state in order to fill the budget gap currently afflicting the state.

Online gambling has not yet been consider an option int he state of Ohio.
