Casino Vote Passes In Maryland, Brings Slots To Arundel Mills Mall

November 3rd, 2010 – by Glen Farmer

Maryland voters had the opportunity to cast their votes on the addition of a casino into Anne Arundel County. Preliminary counts have shown that the casino referendum has passed in the state of Maryland.

According to the referendum, roughly 4,750 slot machines will be installed in a gaming center that will be attached to the Arundel Mills mall. While it will take some time before the slot parlor can be established, it could be as quick as a temporary housing structure.

It has been estimated that $430 million dollars can be generated for the state’s government. Many are under the impression that the slots will help balance the state’s budget.

According to reports, just under 56 percent of voters had approved slot games in the mall. Approximately 103,000 voters cast a yes vote, while 82,000 said no.

The biggest question now is whether or not the slots in the Arundel Mills mall will spell the death of the horse racing industry in the state, or whether or not they will be able to stand up to competition from surrounding states and their larger casino opportunities.

Maryland Online Casinos have not been considered as a way to generate funds for the state.
