San Diego Chargers Favored Over Tennessee Titans In Week 8 Match Up
October 27th, 2010-  By Bryan Cross

The Tennessee Titans and San Diego Chargers meet in Week 8 of the NFL Season, in a match up of two teams playing at the opposite end of the spectrum.  For the Titans, they won going-away against Philadelphia this past Sunday, moving into first-place in the AFC South division.  For the Chargers, it was another loss, this time at the hands of New England.  San Diego now begins to face must-win scenarios as the mid-way point of the season approaches, before they fall too far behind in the AFC West, a division they were picked to dominate at the beginning of the season.

Tennessee (5-2), despite playing without Vince Young dispatched of the Eagles with relative ease in a 37-19 victory with back up quarterback Kerry Collins.  Collins threw for three touchdowns, but did have two interceptions.  Still, the Titans defense continues to play well, create turnovers, and even had a defensive touchdowns on the day.

The Chargers (2-5) dropped a close game to the Patriots 23-20, and are now 2.5 games behind Kansas City in the AFC West division.  Prior to the start of the season, San Diego was set with the best odds of any team in the NFL to make the playoffs this season.  That, appears to be in serious jeopardy, at least through the first seven weeks of the season.

Looking ahead at this one for the Charger on offense, it starts with quarterback Phillip Rivers. While Rivers threw for336 yards on the Patriots, he threw just one touchdown and then equaled that mark with an interception.  It was an inept performance in the first half, as the offense managed just a field goal.  They looked a lot better in the second half, but were unable to make the final plays needed to get the win.  Against the Titans that will see another good defense that is quick to the ball and aggressive.  Rivers will have to rely on tight end Antonio Gates to make big catches, as Gates is a mismatch virtually every time he lines up.

Defensively for the Titans, Cortland Finnegan picked off a pass last week and returned it for a touchdown.  Tennessee forced four turnovers, and continue to play solid on that side of the ball.  Look for the Titans to continue to be aggressive and try and get after Rivers.

For Tennessee on offense, Young might be able to go, dealing with a knee sprain he suffered against Jacksonville last Monday night.  Fortunately for the Titans, they have a back up quarterback who really could start for some teams in the league.  Collins will make mistakes, but he can also make all the throws.  Combine that with running back Chris Johnson, and the Chargers defense this week will have a challenge.

The San Diego defense will likely game plan around stopping Johnson, as he is the cornerstone to the Tennessee offense.  That is a lot easier said than done however.  The Chargers might try to bring seven and eight in the box to force Collins to throw to beat them.
