Bizarre Play Helps Pittsburgh Steelers Past Miami Dolphins 23-20
October 24th, 2010-  By Bryan Cross

Thanks in larger part to a video replay review that was unable to determine who recovered the football in the end after quarterback Ben Roethlisberger fumbled, the Pittsburgh Steelers got past the Miami Dolphins 23-22.

“Just a bizarre kind of play. You hate to win it that way, but you’ll take a win,” Roethlisberger said after the game.

Those sentiments were not exactly shared by all.

“The refs called a wonderful game — for the Steelers,” Dolphin linebacker Channing Crowder said.

The Steelers were trailing 22-20 at the time, when Roethlisberger scrambled to try and reach the end zone.  Prior to touching the ground as he fell towards the goal line however, Roethlisberger lost control of the ball, which bounced into the end zone.  After a scramble for the ball, the play was ruled a touchdown initially.

The play was reviewed, and it was determined that it could not be deemed which team exactly recovered the ball, and therefore the ball would be placed at the half-yard line.  As a result, place kicker Jeff Reed was able to kick the game-winning field goal with just over two minutes remaining in the game.

“I have to have clear video evidence of the team recovering the fumble,” referee Gene Steratore stated after the game. “It is a pile of bodies in there, and you don’t have a clear recovery.”

Pittsburgh (5-1) continues to remain undefeated on the road this season, with their only loss coming at home to Baltimore a few weeks ago.  Miami (3-3) falls to .500 on the year and two games behind division leader New England.

This was Roethlisberger’s second game back since serving his suspension, and his first game on the road.  Roethlisberger completed 19 of 27 passes for 302 yards and two touchdowns.

Defensively for the Steelers however, it was the most points allowed by the Pittsburgh defense this season.

Entering the game, the Steelers were set as a two-point favorite on the road against the Dolphins on USA Online Sportsbooks and NFL Weekly Betting Lines, covering as a result of their three-point victory.  The game’s total of 45 points also cleared the installed line of 40.5 points prior to kickoff.
