Cam Newton And Auburn Tigers Sit Atop BCS Standings After Oklahoma Falls
October 24th, 2010-  By Bryan Cross

Another week,  another team atop the BCS Standings.

Following the Missouri Tigers defeat of the Oklahoma Sooners, a different Tigers team benefited and was vaulted to the top, as the Auburn Tigers slid into the No.1 slot for the first time in school history.

Auburn faced a top-10 opponent in the LSU Tigers this past Saturday, winning 24-17 behind another brilliant performance by quarterback Cam Newton.  Head coach Gene Chizik said however that the team cannot get caught up in the ranking after it was announced that Auburn was in the No.1 position.

“I can only control how we proceed in this building,” Chizik said. “We just had a team meeting and we talked about being very grounded and understanding that every week is another new week and another opportunity.”

Following Auburn is the No.1 team in all of the human polls in the Oregon Ducks.  Oregon was No.2 last week behind Oklahoma, but did not improve their stance after being lept by the Tigers.  Still, it is likely that if Oregon continues to win, they will be in one of the top-two slots come the end of the season and would play in the BCS Championship game.

Following Auburn and Oregon are a couple of non-automatic qualifiers in the Boise State Broncos and the TCU Horned Frogs.  Michigan State rounds out the top-five after coming back to defeat Northwestern after falling behind early. Missouri comes in at the sixth spot after the victory over the Sooners.

Auburn, like Oklahoma last week, ranks third in the human polls, but is atop all computer averages which was enough to vault them into the top spot.  The Tigers have the advantage of the tough SEC schedule, as the BCS computers have a history of favoring the Southeastern Conference.  The last four national championships have been won by SEC teams.

The defending national champion Alabama Crimson Tide rank seventh in the BCS Standings, as they are the top one-loss team in the country.  Alabama will get a shot at LSU and then Auburn in the regular season finale, as they remain well in the hunt in the national championship picture.

USA Online Sportsbooks and College Football Betting Odds favor the Ducks and Tigers to play in the national championship game, with Alabama still getting respect from oddsmakers as well.
