Denver Broncos Favored In AFC West Meeting With Oakland Raiders
October 19th, 2010-  By Bryan Cross

The Denver Broncos and Oakland Raiders meet in an AFC West showdown in Week Seven of the NFL Season, each coming in with a loss in their last outings.  For the Broncos, it was a tough loss to the New York Jets, as Denver could not hold off a rally in the fourth quarter to preserve a win.  For the Raiders, it was a loss to San Francisco, giving the 49ers their first win of the season. Now, both Denver and Oakland enter this game looking to rebound from last week, while at the same time trying to get an important division win.

Both Denver and Oakland enter into their match up with identical 2-4 records, with the loser of this one likely digging themselves an insurmountable hole to overcome for a playoff berth.  To the victor goes the chance to climb back into a division race that is wide open with San Diego struggling a 2-4 and division leading Kansas City at 3-2.

Looking ahead at this one for the Broncos on the offensive side of the ball, quarterback Kyle Orton has played well for Denver on the whole.  He threw for 209 yards and a touchdown Sunday against the Jets, a defense that is one of the best in the league at forcing turnovers and poor throws by a quarterback.  Running back Knowshon Moreno returned to the lineup, but only tabbed 48 yards on the afternoon and lost a fumble.  Moreno’s production will be important in this game and going forward for the Broncos and a well-balanced offensive attack.

For the Raiders defensively, shutting down Moreno and the Denver run game to make the Bronco offense one-dimensional will likely be an important factor in this game.  They may find difficulty in doing that however, as the Raiders rank 30th against the run.  The bright spot however is that Oakland ranks eighth in the league against the pass, so they can give Orton tough windows to throw into.

For the Raiders on offense, quarterback Jason Campbell got the start for the injured Bruce Gradkowski, and completed eight of 21 passes for only 83 yards in an inept performance. The Raiders managed only 179 yards in offense last Sunday, a statistic that will have to change if Oakland has hopes of defeating Denver.  Even the run game with Michael Bush barely crossed the 100-yard mark, with Bush gaining 47.  Gradkoswki’s status for Denver is questionable

Defensively for the Broncos in this one, it has not been a strong suit so far this season.  They rank 25th against the run and 15th against the pass.  Fortunately, the Raiders seem out of sorts in both phases of the offense.  Look for the Broncos to mix up blitz packages and coverages to confuse the Oakland quarterback, whomever it may be.
