NFL Week 5 Previews: Indianapolis An Asserted Favorite Over Undefeated Kansas City
October 8th, 2010-  By Bryan Cross

The NFL’s lone unbeaten team will put perfection on the line in week five of the 2010 NFL Season when the Kansas City Chiefs travel to Indianapolis to take on the Colts.  For the Chiefs, they come off a Bye week in which they saw two undefeated teams fall.  For the Colts, they lost a tough one on the road to AFC South foe Jacksonville, courtesy of a 59-yard field goal as time expired.

The Colts find themselves in unfamiliar territory four weeks into the season, as they sit at 2-2 on the year.  Typically, quarterback Peyton Manning and company have gotten off to fast starts, as they hold the record for most consecutive seasons with at least 12 wins, at seven.  That streak is still active, but could be in jeopardy if Indianapolis continues to make mistakes that is costing them wins.  The Colts are 0-2 in the AFC South, a division that they have owned over the course of the last decade.  Indianapolis has lost to both Houston and Jacksonville, and must win this week to avoid falling below .500.

On the other sideline, the Chiefs could fall in line with several teams who would have thought to be the last among the ranks of the unbeaten.  But alas, that is exactly the position in which they find themselves in.  Kansas City started with a big win over AFC West foe San Diego, and the winning has continued.

Looking ahead at this one, the Colts get back home, where they have not lost this season, as  each of the losses to the Texans and Jaguars came on the road.  For the Colts on offense, they have been productive.  Manning continues to put up big numbers and receivers Reggie Wayne, Austin Collie and tight end Dallas Clark lead the way through the air.  Running back Joesph Addai had a solid outing last week, scoring twice.  The Colts have always tried to keep balanced on offense, and if Addai can get the ground game going, evidence shows like the game against the Giants earlier this season that Indianapolis could be unstoppable.

For the Chiefs on defense, it’s about containment.  It’s pretty impossible to completely stop Manning and the Coltsoffense, but if they can limit the big plays and keep everything in front of them, they have a shot here.  Despite being undefeated, they enter this one in an underdog role, with many not giving them a chance.  Disrespect could play a role here.

On offense for the Chiefs, they have not wowed anyone with their performances, but they have been efficient enough, and gotten help from special teams and the defense for complete team wins.  Running back Jamaal Charles will be a key in this one, as getting him going will help quarterback Matt Cassel throw against a Colt secondary that has been prone to give up yards and scores this season.

Defensively for the Colts, they have not been much good or much help for the offense.  Surrendering yardage and big plays has been an Achilles heel so far this season, and the absence of safety Bob Sanders and now his replacement Melvin Bullit surely won’t help the cause.  But, the veteran line up front is good, and if they can get pressure from Dwight Freeney and company,  it could be a long day for Cassel.
