College Football Previews: No.7 Nebraska Set As Big Favorite Over Kansas State In Big 12 Match Up
October 7th, 2010- By Bryan Cross

A Big 12 North showdown takes place on Thursday night when the Nebraska Cornhuskers face the Kansas State Wildcats.  While the Cornhuskers come in ranked No.7 in the country, each team is undefeated and the Wildcats have proven to be dangerous at home.

Nebraska is coming off of a bye week this past Saturday and look to begin the year with five wins for the first time since 2003.  Quarterback Taylor Martinez has been a cornerstone to the recent success for the the team, leading the fourth-ranked rushing offense that averages close to 310 yards per game.  Martinez is the nation’s 11th ranked rusher, gaining 124 yards per game, and has reached the end zone eight times.  The Nebraska quarterback has rushed for over 100 yards in the last three games prior the the last outing

Against South Dakota State two weeks ago, Martinez had his worst game of the season, losing a fumble and throwing two interceptions.  He rushed for 75 yards, but completed only 6 of 14 passed for 140 yards.

“Sometimes I tried too hard to try to make the offense make a play,” Martinez said of his game against South Dakota State. “I tried my best. Obviously, it didn’t work out very well.”

His team believes that Martinez is learning from each games, remembering that he is only a redshirt freshman.

“He’ll live to see another day,” remarked offensive coordinator Shawn Watson. “He has to learn from this experience and then get back in the saddle. He’s a tough kid, a tough competitor. He told me he’s fine and he’ll be ready to go back to work.”

Looking ahead at the Wildcats, Martinez could be poised for some big number, as Kansas State ranks last in the Big 12conference against the run, surrendering 195.5 yards per game.

For Kansas State in this one, they may find points difficult to come by.  The Cornhuskers give up under 13 points per game which ranks seventh in the country.

The Wildcats are also undefeated, but had to mount a comeback last week to defeat Central Florida, getting the go-ahead score with less than :30 remaining in the game.

“We laid a massive egg during the first half of the ballgame and a good portion of the second half,” said Kansas State head coach Bill Snyder. “But when we had to have it, we were able to get it.”

Kansas State is averaging 30 points per game, and also present a potent rushing attacks which puts up 216 yards per game.  The Wildcats have already notched their first Big 12 win of the year, defeating Iowa State last month.

“They are a good football team,” he said. “They are well coached. They are physical. They are good team. It will be a real challenge on the road. We’re looking forward to it.”
