Chris Johnson, Vince Young Lead Tennessee Titans (-6.5) Against Underdog Denver Broncos

October 2nd, 2010 – by Alex

The Denver Broncos (1-2) will head to Tennessee to take on the Titans (2-1) in Week 4 action between two teams that are hoping to spark playoff runs with a much-needed victory. This game is slated for 1pm EST kickoff and coverage can be seen on CBS as well as DirecTV channel 707.

In a surprising turn of events, the Broncos have ended up with the No. 1 ranked passing game in the league averaging 350 per game in the air courtesy of quarterback, Kyle Orton. Despite losing wide receiver, Brandon Marshall via trade to the Miami Dolphins prior to the season beginning, the receiving core has been spearheaded by Brandon Lloyd who has had 14 catches for 334 yards so far in the season. The team’s biggest weakness, offensively, has been their run attack which ranks 30th in the league with a mere 67 yards per game.

Defensively, the Broncos are still led by Pro-Bowl cornerback Champ Bailey but are still sorely lacking with the absence of Elvis Dumervil. The lack of a prominent linebacker is represented with a mere two sacks through four weeks.

A lot of things have to go right for Denver in order for them to beat the Titans. Orton will have to continue playing up to his current level, and the running game will have to improve. Unfortunately, the team’s starting running back Knowshon Moreno will be out for this game so a lot of the burden will fall on Laurence Maroney and Correl Buckhalter. On the defensive side, considering how easy of a time Maurice Jones-Drew had with this group, it’ll be interesting to see what the Titans’ Chris Johnson will do to them.

Meanwhile, the Titans find themselves coming off a 29-10 victory over the struggling New York Giants in a game that was much closer than it should have been. Tennessee ended up getting outgained 471 yards to 271 yards for the day, and will need to make sure that it doesn’t happen again on Sunday. Considering how poorly the Broncos have been bringing pressure this year, quarterback, Vince Young should have plenty of time to throw against them. Receiver, Nate Washington will try to help his QB by leading a very weak receiving group with 10 catches for 152 yards and two touchdowns thus far in this early season. Running back, Johnson has done exactly what’s been expected of him this year, and that’s dominating his opponents.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Titans have a very underrated pass defense that will no doubt try to put the stops on Orton. So far in 2010 the team has recorded 10 sacks, and they’ll be looking to add to that total on Sunday.

All in all, if the Titans defense is able to attack their opponents’ quarterback and make sure the Denver running doesn’t magically have a breakout game, they should be fine. Further, considering the Broncos’ proven inability to be a strong run defense team, the Titans will likely run Johnson down their throats until the Broncos give them enough room to utilize Young’s weapons.
