NFL Week 4 Previews: Green Bay A Two-Touchdown Favorite Over Detroit
September 30th, 2010-  By Bryan Cross

A NFC North match up takes place in week four of the 2010 NFL Season when the Detroit Packers and the Green Bay Packers.  Each team is coming off a division loss.  For Detroit, it was a two-touchdown defeat to Minnesota.  For Green Bay, it was a penalty-filled 20-17 Monday Night defeat at the hands of the Chicago Bears.

The Lions have lost three-straight games to begin the season, and continue to search for answers to try and get their first win of the year.  Last week against the Vikings, the Lions were not able to get much going on offense, with quarterback Shaun Hill throwing two interceptions.  Running back Jahvid Best was also ineffective, as Minnesota contained both facets of the Detroit offense.

On the other side of the ball, the definition of “shooting themselves in the foot” was on full display in the Packers Monday Night match up on the road in Chicago.  The Bears committed 18 penalties in the game, losing by a field goal.  Quarterback Aaron Rodgers and company could not sustain drives when they kept having to surrender five yards and 10 yards due to infractions.  This week, Green Bay will have to play a clean game if they hope to continue to get better.

Looking ahead at this one for the Lions on offense, they need to get Best more involved, as he is a player capable of breaking for the big gain virtually every time that he touches the ball.  He carried the ball only seven times for 26 yards and did not account for a touchdown.  He left the game in the third quarter with an injury and his status and availability for this week could be limited, which would not be good news for Detroit.

Defensively for the Packers, they have perhaps the best player in football right now in linebacker Clay Matthews, who has been wreaking havoc on opposing offenses and is on pace to have 15 or more sacks.  Combine that with the solid secondary and good pass rush and the Lions could be in for a long afternoon.

Offensively for the Packers, the penalty situation will have no doubt been addressed in practice this week, and Rodgers and company will likely be eager to get back on the field and rebound from Monday night’s performance.

For the Lions on defense, they need to be able to protect against the pass, as the Green Bay run game has been unproductive since Ryan Grant went out in week one of the season.  If Detroit can limit Rodgers and the passing game, they might be able to hang around late in this one and give themselves a chance.

Game Line-

USA Online Sportsbooks have the Packers as a 14.5-point favorite in this Week 4 NFL Match Up, with the over/under set at 45 points, indicating that oddsmakers believe this will not be a close one.
