2010 Ryder Cup Day One Matches Announced, Tiger Woods Paired With Steve Stricker
September 30th, 2010-  By Bryan Cross

The 2010 Ryder Cup begins on Friday in Wales at Celtic Manor golf Course.  Thursday, the Day One pairings and matches between the United States team and European team were announced by captains Corey Pavin and Colin Montgomerie.

The first match out Friday morning will be between the U.S team of Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson, facing Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer of the European squad.

Looking ahead at this match their recent history between Johnson and Kaymer stemming from the PGA Championship.  There, Johnson held a one-shot lead on the 72nd, but received a two-stroke penalty for grounding his club in what was later found out to be a bunker.  As a result, Johnson missed out on the opportunity to get into a playoff, which was won by Kaymer for his first-career Major Championship.

Mickelson and Westwood have plenty of Ryder Cup experience, as both captain’s paired a veteran and a young player in this opening group.  All four players come into the 2010 Ryder Cup playing well, as the winner of this match will get their team off to a positive start.

In the second match of the morning, Stewart Cink and Matt Kuchar will represent the United States teams against Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell, both of Northern Ireland.  Cink and Kuchar go a long way back, as both graduated from Georgia Tech.  Cink was a captain’s selection this year, while Kuchar endured the best season of his career, coming close to winning the season-long 2010 FedEx Cup.

On the European side of the equation, McDowell won the United States Open back in June, while McIlroy is one of the top players in the game today.  This team will have the gallery on their side, playing in Wales at Celtic Manor.

Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker will go out in the third morning match for the United States team, where they will face Ian Poulter and Ross Fisher.  For the first time in his career, Woods has not won a PGA Tour event this year, needing Pavin to select him to the team.  While he did not qualify based on points, Woods has shown signs of late that his game is coming around, and Pavin could simply not afford to not pick the No.1 player in the world.  USA Online Sportsbooks have this match as the only match where the United States are favored in the morning.
