NFL week 4 Match Ups: Donovan McNabb Returns To Philadelphia As Road Underdog
September 29th, 2010-  By Bryan Cross

One of the most anticipated games of the young 2010 NFL Season takes place when Donovan McNabb and the Washington Redskins travel to Philadelphia to take on Michael Vick and the Eagles.  McNabb spent his entire career with the Eagles, making five NFC Title games and a Super Bowl, and now makes his return for the first time ever in a different uniform.

On the other side of the ball, Vick has overtaken the starting quarterback job from Kevin Kolb, after Kolb went down with a concussion in week one.  While it is not typical that a starter will lose his job due to injury, head coach Andy Reid could simply not overlook the production that Vick was having on the field.

The Eagles are off to a 2-1 start, 2-0 under the direction of Vick as a starter, with the most recent win over Jacksonville 28-3.  It was the most complete game for the season so far for Philadelphia, who will look to continue that streak against the Redskins.

For the Redskins, they are coming off of loss to the St. Louis Rams, in which McNabb threw for 236 yards, a touchdown and one interception.  Washington simply couldn’t get the ball in the end zone against the Rams, and subsequently lost a game they were favored to win.

Looking ahead at this one, the big build up will be silenced by kickoff as both Vick and McNabb have tried to down play the scenario.  For Vick and the Eagles on offense, they have been very productive.  Vick threw for 3 touchdowns and no interceptions against Jacksonville and will look for that type of production against Washington.  He has been very accurate and careful with the ball, and the offense is revolving around him.  Look for Philadelphia to try and keep a similar game plan and a balance between running and throwing.

For the Washington defense, it appears that they have quite the task ahead of him to guard against the arms and legs of Vick.  With the threat of Vick running, the Redskins will not have a choice buy to spy him and keep a linebacker on him at times to prevent him from taking off and beating them with his legs.

McNabb and the Redskins offense will have to be more productive this week than they were against the Rams last week.  The run game with Clinton Portis was ineffective, as he gained just 44 yards on seven carries.

For the Philadelphia defense, it’s about getting after McNabb and getting him to make bad throws.  Preventing Portis from beating them on the ground will also be a key in this one for the Eagles.
