Exciting Opening Weekend of College Football Wraps Up Tonight

Sports Betting News - September 8th, 2009 - Written by Scott

For eight months, college football fans from around the nation have waited for this time of year to arrive, the first weekend of college football.   There was not a lack for exciting games over the past few days as college football kicked off its 2009 season.  This past weekend brought about some close games in the top 25 and also presented some upsets as well.  In addition, a few teams had to fight to the end to avoid the upset bug this weekend.   Overall, it was a great weekend for the start of college football.  But it's not over yet, there are still two games scheduled today.

No. 1 ranked Florida breezed by Charleston Southern on Saturday as Tim Tebow and company once again showed their ability to put up points on offense.  Ohio State, No. 6 in the country, escaped a potential upset to Navy on Saturday afternoon.  Brian Rolle intercepted a pass on a two point play for the Buckeyes to prevent a tie in the closing minutes of their 31-27 victory.   LSU also had their hands full with unranked Washington.  They escaped with a 31-23 win over the Huskies.

Two other top 25 games featuring ranked teams also took place on Saturday.  Alabama topped Virginia Tech 34-24 and Oklahoma State got by Georgia 24-10 as the Bulldogs get off to a bad start without Matthew Stafford.

Probably the most intriguing game of the weekend took place Saturday night as No. 3 ranked Oklahoma lost to No. 20 BYU 14-13.  Not only did the Sooners lose the game, they lost their Heisman winning quarterback Sam Bradford to a shoulder injury late in the first half.  This obliviously did not help Oklahoma by any means, but it helped BYU's case in getting back to the elite in college football with this huge upset.  If BYU can get by Florida State in two weeks, this could very well be the case.  Bradford is going through treatment now, but there is no timetable as to when he will return.

The first weekend of college football wraps up today as Cincinatti plays Rutgers and No. Florida State hosts Miami tonight.  In what is one of college football's most heated rivalry games, both the Seminoles and the Hurricans are on a quest to get their programs back among the nation's elite.  Neither teams wanted to open their season against each other, but ESPN and the money involved helped in staging this Labor Day matchup.  Bobby Bowden is entering his 34th season as the head coach at Florida State and depending on NCCA results, is looking to pass Joe Paterno as the all time victory leader.  This game is without a doubt a great way to wrap up the first weekend of the 2009 college football season.
