NFL News - October 12th, 2009 - Written by Scott

presidents cupThe United States went on to win their third straight President's Cup on Sunday, riding the play of Tiger Woods who went 5-0 during the tournament. The US is now 6-1-1 since the tournament began in 1994 and is perfect on their home soil in the President's Cup. This is the first time since 2000 that the Americans have won both the President's Cup and the Ryder Cup in the same year. The Americans won this year 19 1/2 - 14 1/2, so those of you who bet on them at Online Sportsbooks congratulaitons. Woods sealed the victory with a birdie putt on the 13th. He received help early on Sunday from Stewart Sink and Anthony Kim which gained early points, putting Woods in position to finish the win.

"It's one of my better Cup experiences -- we won, and that's the name of the game, whether you go 0-5 or 5-0," Woods said. "The fact that we won, that's the No. 1 thing. We came here to win as a team, and we did it."

Woods was paired with Y.E. Yang and won his matchup 6 to 5. This marks the first time the two have been paired since Yang came back to beat woods in the final round at a major. Woods has the most victories with 18 in this tournament. He won four holes during a five hole stretch which ended the Internationals chances of winning.

"He got me there, and I figured I could get him here," Woods said. "It certainly was not exactly the same atmosphere, but then it still was an important point."

The International team had their moments in the tournament. Tim Clark had a 4 to 3 victory over Zach Johnson. Eighteen year old Ryo Ishikawa ended up beating Kenny Perry and Vijay Singh led the International team with 2-0-3 record. His record could have been better had he not missed a short on the 18th hole. The Internationals had a tough road to follow coming into Sunday's action with the Americans holding a three point lead. Geoff Ogilvy reiterated this and he knew what lied ahead of them.

"I'm sure we tried our best all week," Ogilvy said after his 2-and-1 victory over Steve Stricker. "Coming in today, we had too much to do and the U.S. team was obviously very motivated."

The next Presidents Cup will be held in 2011 at Royal Melbourne in Australia, the site where the International team posted their only win back in 1998.
