Ex-Nebraska Cornhusker RB Thunder Collins Get Life In Prison

Sports News - November 14th, 2009 - Written by Jimmy

On Friday, sentencing was held for ex-Nebraska Cornhusker running back Thunder Collins for a 2008 incident which left one man dead and another injured. The Douglas County District Court gave Collins a life sentence, along with another 110 years for other charges including attempted murder and illegal weapons charges.

Collins’s attorney plans to appeal the decision.

The incident happened in Omaha, Nebraska and was the result of a drug deal gone bad. Prosecutors say that Collins had intended to rob the men. Timothy Thomas, who was killed in the shooting, was found dead in a house while Marshall Turner was found seriously wounded in a nearby hotel parking lot. Police immediately connected the two shooting and within a day Collins had been arrested in connection with the murders.

As a member of the 2000 and 2001 Cornhuskers Thunder Collins didn't have much success. In those two years, Collins appeared in 15 games while only starting once. During that time, Collins ran the ball 107 times and picked up a net total of 724 yards, good for a 6.8 yard average. Collins found the endzone 5 times in the 2001 season.

Collins is just another ex-Nebraska running back who has trouble with the law. Collins is joined by Lawrence Phillips who was once a prolific rusher for the Cornhuskers.

In August of 2009, Phillips was convicted on 7 felony charges and faces up to another 25 years in prison along with the 10 he's already serving. Among the charges that Phillips was convicted on was auto theft, great bodily injury, false imprisonment, and making criminal threats. Currently, Phillips is serving 10 years for hitting 3 teenagers with his car as he drove onto a field in Los Angeles. Phillips had also been suspected in choking is girlfriend twice, once into unconsciousness.
