2003 Steroids Testing Reveals Ortiz and Ramirez as Newest Users

Sports Betting News - July 30th, 2009 - Written by Glen

A mass test in 2003 revealed nearly 100 MLB players to have used performance enhancing substances. This list has not been fully disclosed, but in this year we have seen a trickle of names leaking out into the press. The newest members to be revealed were Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz, one of which had previously been suspended for the use of drugs. Ramirez was suspended in early May of 2009, and had to miss 50 games during the season.

Though these results were meant to remain anonymous, the results remained in existence and have been seized by the government. Amongst the other stars taken from this list were Barry Bonds and Sammy Sosa, two stars that had been hailed as record breakers. We all remember the slugging match between Sammy Sosa and Mark McGuire in 1998, as well as the anabolic steroid accusations pointed in McGuire's direction.

Performance enhancing drugs have plagued the MLB for some time now, and many are beginning to wonder if some of the greatest achievements in the sport's recent history were due to the use steroids and the like. As more names roll off the list, many American heroes are having their life's work devalued. The use of drugs is a major issue within the sport, and the league is trying to reduce these numbers significantly. After all, it is highly doubtful that Babe Ruth juiced in his era. Others will say that as more players are beginning to use steroids, the professionals who are not are eventually going to be unable to keep up.

The list of those who were using performance enhancing drugs during 2003 was seized by the federal government under the pretext that they wish to find out where the drugs are coming from. Many of the players have been questioned, and names are inevitably being released. The player's Union has been fighting to have the list reburied, but the continued litigation has seen no results.
