World Cup of Online Poker in Full Swing

Poker News - September 5th, 2009 - Written by Glen

wcoopPokerStars, the largest online poker room, kicked off the World Cup of Online Poker in early September. Four events have come and gone, and $2,738,300 has already been distributed to seventy countries around the world.

Online poker tournaments used to run only No Limit Hold em, but the WCOOP has events ranging the whole gamut. The first tournament of September 5th, 2009, will be the 6-max pot limit Omaha. The day will include a million dollar guaranteed no limit Hold 'em game, with the low buy-in of $109 dollars. Fixed limit hold 'em, five card draw, and single draw 2-7 also make up today's events, with buy-ins ranging from $109-$215. No prize pool will be under $50,000, giving all player an opportunity to make what could be considered a year's salary by some.

While some can afford these buy-ins, others cannot. As such, PokerStars is offering a constant stream of satellites to allow their more frugal or penurious players a shot at bigger cash. Buy-ins to these satellites range from $0.50 to $500, with the $500 giving a shot at the $10,000 buy-in events. With such low buy-ins, players have an opportunity to turn less than a dollar into a million dollar prize.

In addition to the fabulous prizes at hand, the winners of each event will receive a bracelet, not entirely dissimilar to that found in the World Series of Poker bracelets. Cash is a great prize, but pride and satisfaction are both equally as enticing. Such a prestigious series of online tournaments has been seen only once before, and that was the 2008 WCOOP.

The World Cup of Online Poker is only available to PokerStars members, but registration is quick, free, and easy. For the time being, PokerStars is also offering a 100% match to $600 dollars as a bonus. This can be used to enter their WCOOP tournaments, giving the player the chance to increase their beginning bankroll and perhaps take one of the bracelets.
