One Girl Falls Victim To A High Stakes Poker Game

Poker News - September 22nd, 2009 - Written by Bonnie

poker handFor those of you poker fans that like to get in on the high stakes games, can understand the scrambling of coming up with wagers when trying to outlast other players in a game, but no one can fathom just how far one Pakistani man went some 15 years ago. More than a decade has passed since one Pakistani man entered into a high stakes game with one bet that has come back to haunt him years later. 15 years ago, a man went all in during a poker game and lost, the wager believe it or not, was his 2 year old daughter.

The daughter, Rasheeda, was only a child at the time the wager was placed and lost. The father promised Lal Haider, 45, the rights to his daughter when she was grown up and now that Rasheeda is 17 years of age, Haider is ready to collect. Just this past year, Haider was paid the 10,000 rupee debt, which totals $151, but still feels he is due the full winnings, which include Rasheeda.

Haider and Rasheeda belong to the same tribe and according to tribal customs, he should still receive Rasheeda even after such a long time period and even though a portion of the debt was in fact collected. Haider plans on offering Rasheeda's hand in marriage to one of his sons. A tribal council meeting was held to discus the options and one member of the council made it clear that Haider should in deed receive Rasheeda.

While the tribal council's believes were taken into consideration, the Hyderabad police have stated that Rasheeda will not be forced to do anything against her will.

Despite what we as American's believe, other countries live by a different set of standards and customs are very much like what we consider our laws. In many countries, such as Pakistan, arranged marriages are very common. The male members of the household can indeed make arrangements and or promises of exchanging persons under certain circumstances. Although Rasheeda has no intension of following through on the marriage, she is one of the many women that have been faced with issues similar to what she is going through now.

It is after hearing stories such as Rasheeda's, that we realize how lucky Americans are to live in a country full of choices.
