Richard Austin Wins Event 35 At The 2009 World Series Of Poker

June 20, 2009 - Written by Bonnie

363 Players entered event 35 in the 2009 World Series Of Poker but only a player by the name of Richard Austin can call himself the champion. Richard Austin brought home a first place prize of $409,484 for his win. The minimum prize for the tournament was $11,345 and there was a total of 36 players that got paid. The tournament was a $5,000 buy in with a prize pool of $1,706,100. There was more then double the number of entrants this year compared to last year which really goes to show how many people may actually play poker for a living after the online poker boom.

The final hand was one that consisted of all three players that were left in the hand. Richard Austin had Queen high to begin the hand, but caught the card he needed for a straight on the river. One of the other players had pocket kings and hit a set on the flop and the other player had pocket aces at the start of the hand. All 3 players had all of their chips out after the flop.

Phil Galfond was the winner of $817,781 out of a much more recognizable group of poker players last year that made the final table. The final table in this event in 2008 consisted of Johnny Chan, Phil Helmuth, John Juanda, and others. The difference between this years and last years tournament is the fact that last years was a rebuy tournament and this years Pot Limit Omaha was not. No truly big names in the poker world made it to the money in this tournament this year. By this not being a rebuy tournament, the WSOP allowed more players the opportunity to enter the event.
