Favre Out For Preseason Finale

NFL News - September 4th, 2009 - Written by John

Vikings quarterback Brett Favre is still suspicious that his sore ribs are actually cracked and for head coach Brad Childress, playing in another meaningless preseason game is just not worth the risk. Favre will sit out the Vikings' final preseason game against the Cowboys Friday night. It will be welcomed rest for the 39-year old, who has felt discomfort in his torso ever since joining the team in early August.

"I don't see the upside," Childress said on ESPN.com.

It's not that Favre couldn't use the extra time on the field to get further acclimated with his new team. After all, it's only been 16 days since he joined up and has played just over three quarters. The majority of that came last Monday when he convinced Childress play him deep into the third quarter against the Houston Texans. He looked comfortable, albeit unremarkable, against the Texans, going 13-for-18 for 142 yards and a score. But he only threw four passes over 10 yards and had several potential interceptions dropped by the Houston defense. Childress, although, is convinced the All-Pro gunslinger will fit in just fine come week one, starting his 18th consecutive season under center.

"I thought he made a nice jump from Week 1 to Week 2 and showed he's got a good understanding of what we're doing," Childress said.

Minnesota will be three-point favorites at home with an even payout line, according to DSI Sportsbook. The Vikings are 3-0 so far against the spread, while the Cowboys (1-2) have yet to be tabbed as the underdogs. The over under is set at 36.

Dallas quarterback Tony Romo probably won't see much of the field, either, nor will may of the starters. Wide receiver Roy Williams has been hampered by a shoulder injury and will probably be held out, for the 2nd week in a row. He injured himself in practice last Thursday and head coach Wade Phillips has been cautious with his body. Instead, the Cowboys will be looking upon their clip of other receivers to step up and take a spot behind he and Patrick Crayton. The Cowboys are looking to fill the void left by Terrell Owens, who signed with Buffalo over the off-season. Sam Hurd is reportedly having great preseasons, says ESPN.com, leading the team in yards through three games, with two catches of over 20 yards.

Another big question heading into the finale will be at offensive line. After the Cowboys' starting five there isn't much depth to be found. Leonard Davis is a Pro Bowler but outside of that, an injury could really devastate the offense.
