Colts' Sanders Out For Season

NFL News - November 6th, 2009 - Written by John

bob sandersBob Sanders couldn't even make it through two games.

The injury-prone safety, who had just returned to the field two weeks ago, suffered another catastrophic injury during last week's game against the San Francisco 49ers and will need surgery to repair a torn biceps tendon. The surgery will end his season.

It's even worse news after the Indianapolis Colts' secondary already lost it's two starters for the season. Kelvin Hayden is expected to miss about a month with a bum knee and Marlin Jackson will be shelved for the season after tearing his ACL. Jackson tore his knee on the final play of practice on Wednesday.

Together they are pieces to a puzzle that tell a story of devastation this year for the Colts, who already were without no. 2 receiver Anthony Gonzalez, who injured his knee during a play in which he wasn't even touched. He was supposed to be healthy around this point, but was forced to undergo more surgery to clear up loose particles in his knee.

But Sanders' injury is particularly unsettling given his tremendous upside and well-documented inability to use it. He was the 2007 Defensive Player of the Year, but missed most of last season and the first part of this one recovering from knee surgery. Sanders has played in six games or less in four of his six seasons.

He came back last week against the Niners, but was hurt and came out of the game. Initial reports of a sore elbow were false, but Sanders met with renowned Dr. James Andrews in Alabama to discuss his options.

The Colts will get little sympathy from the league, however. They are 7-0, one of two unbeaten teams in the league, and can put a strangle hold on the division with a win against the Houston Texans this Sunday.

Quarterback Peyton Manning is having one of his best statistical years, making stars out of young players like Pierre Garcon and Austin Collie, and is on pace to break Dan Marino's single-season passing yardage record.
