Philadelphia Gets By Washington 27-17

NFL News - October 27th, 2009 - Written by Scott

eaglesThe Philadelphia Eagles were looking to rebounded from a humiliating loss to the Oakland Raiders last week. They accomplished what they had set out to do on Monday night behind big plays from DeSean Jackson and rolled past Washington 27-17. Jackson had a 67 yard touchdown run and a 57 yard touchdown reception as the Eagles improved to 4-2 on the year. The Washington Redskins (2-5) were hampered by 4 turnovers, 3 of which were converted into points by the Eagles. The Washington offense could not get anything going with their new play caller Sherm Lewis and the defense could not overcome the offense's lackluster performance.

"You can say but so much," defensive tackle Albert Hayesnworth said. "You've got to actually want to. So once we get to that point -- where we want to do something -- then we'll do something. But if we just keep going our separate ways, then we'll just keep getting slaughtered like we have."

Jackson got the Eagles out in front 7-0 early in the opening period on his 67 yard touchdown run. Then, late in the first quarter, newly acquired linebacker Will Witherspoon intercepted Jason Campbell's pass deep in the Redskins territory and returned the ball 9 yards to put the Eagles ahead 14-0. The Eagles would tack on 13 more points in the second quarter on two field goals from David Akers and Jackson's 57 yard touchdown reception. Washington got their only score of the first half on a 2 yard touchdown reception by Devin Thomas from Campbell and the Redskins trailed 27-10 heading into halftime. The lone score of the second half would come with 1:38 remaining in the game on a 2 yard pass reception by Washington receiver Fred Davis. Witherspoon made his presence known in his first game with the Eagles after only being with the team less than week.

"You can't expect to get a sack, cause a fumble, turnover, interception for touchdown -- whatever," Witherspoon said. "It's like, 'What? Who in their right mind would think that in their first game?' But when it comes down to it, it happened."

Despite the lone interception by Campbell, the Redskins quarterback played well and threw for 284 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Washington offense, however, has not been able to surpass 17 points in a game all season.

"Well, the result was the same. We got 17 points," Redskins head coach Jim Zorn said. "It was difficult for me. It was difficult to stand and watch. The hard part is to keep your mouth shut."

Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb passed for 156 yards and 1 touchdown. He also got his 200th passing touchdown and topped the 30,000 career yard mark in passing yards. The Eagles will host the New York Giants on Sunday and Washington will enter their bye week before traveling to play at Atlanta in Week 9.

From the beginning of the game, it was apparent that the Eagles would cover the point spread against Washington. NFL betting odds had the Eagles favored by 8 and a strong defensive effort in the second half secured their 10 point win.
