Colts Move To 5-0 After 21-9 Route Over Tennessee

NFL News - October 12th, 2009 - Written by Scott

coltsIndianapolis quarterback Peyton Manning is making it look too easy. Manning threw for 3 touchdowns and moved into third all time in career touchdowns as the Indianapolis Colts breezed by the Tennessee Titans 31-9 on Sunday night. The Titans started last season 10-0, but now find themselves at 0-5 this year. The undefeated Colts have great control in the AFC South with Jacksonville and Houston behind them tied for second with records of 2-3. Manning is now one of only three quarterbacks in history to have thrown for over 300 yards in the first five games of a season. Also, he is the third quarterback to have a passer rating of over 100 in at least 70 games. Manning attributes these accomplishments to his teammates.

"You try to do what you have to do to win. I've never been about that or try to do that in the middle of the season. At the end of the season, I'll admit that. I'll do that for other people. Like if Reggie Wayne needs five catches, I'll do that," he said.

Manning opened up the scoring for the Colts with 7:28 remaining in the first quarter on a 3 yard touchdown pass to Wayne. The Titans, who managed only three field goals in the game, responded with two of their three in the first quarter to cut the Colts' lead to one. Two touchdowns late in the second quarter would put the game out of reach for Tennessee, as their offense was non-existent all night. Joseph Addai would score on a 1 yard run and Manning would find Austin Collie from 39 yards out to give the Colts a 21-9 lead heading into halftime.

The Colts would extend their lead in the third quarter on Collie's second touchdown reception of the night and added a field goal from Adam Vinatieri in the fourth to give the Colts a 31-9 victory. The game matched the league's best passing offense against the league's worst passing defense and it showed as Manning passed for 309 yards. The Colts also showed that their defense is a group that can stop their opponents. The Titans managed just 245 total yards on the night and quarterback Kerry Collins was held to just 164 yards passing and threw 1 interception.

The Tennessee Titans continued to struggle against the Colts on Sunday night and now have been held without a touchdown in their last 8 quarters against Indianapolis. They have lost seven straight games dating back to last year and will look to finally get their first win of the season when they travel to play New England next Sunday. The Colts are entering their bye week this weekend and will play at St. Louis in week 7.
