Denver Broncos Listed As 3 Point Underdogs At San Francisco 49ers

NFL News - August 14th, 2009 - Written by Ryan Smith

The San Francisco 49ers will host the Denver Broncos on Friday in what will be the first preseason game for both teams this season. The 49ers are coming off a disappointing 7-9 season, while the Broncos finished last year at 8-8. Tonight's game will be the first chance to see both teams in action for the 2009 NFL Season. After finishing last season winning four of their last five games, the 49ers elevated interim coach Mike Singletary to the team's head coach coming into this season. Denver struggled greatly down the stretch last year which led to some big off season changes. First year Head Coach Josh McDaniels will be looking to get off to a good start in the team's first preseason game at the 49ers. Betting Lines have the home team for tonight's game listed as the favorite, as the San Francisco 49ers betting line is set at -3 (+110). The visiting Denver Broncos are listed at +3 (-130). The over/under for tonight's game is set at 34 points, with both the over and under paying out at -110. San Francisco is coming into tonight's match up as a three point favorite. They ended last season on a tear winning five of their last seven games. Their Head Coach Mike Singletary is known for being a very intense coach who expects his players to play hard on every snap. This bodes well for them in tonight's game against the Broncos. Singletary will expect his players to play hard on every play, which should give the team a great chance to cover the three point spread. Shaun Hill and Alex Smith should both see playing time tonight at quarterback. Hill is expected to be the team's starter this year, but Smith will look to play his best to earn his starting job back. Two of the 49ers key offensive players are not expected to play, as both Frank Gore and Isaac Bruce will not be in uniform. The 49ers back ups will need to play well tonight since they will see the bulk of the playing time.

Tonight will be the first chance for NFL fans to see the new look Denver Broncos. First year Head Coach Josh McDaniels will be looking to implement a new offensive system for the Broncos, after many years under former Head Coach Mike Shanahan. This will be the team's first game without Jay Cutler under center. Kyle Orton is expected to be the starter this season, but Chris Simms will battle him this preseason for the starting job. McDaniels has stated that he plans to play his starters for the entire first half tonight. Whether they stay in for that long remains to be seen, but fans can expect to see the Broncos play their starters for longer than most teams would in their first preseason game. With both quarterbacks looking to impress their new coach, the Broncos could be a good bet as a three point underdog tonight.
