International Olympic Committee to Monitor Sports Gambling, Match Fixing

Gambling News - October 5th, 2009 - Written by Glen

olympicsSports gambling has been on the rise over the past few years, particularly amongst the Internet, and the International Olympic Committee will be monitoring most avenues of sports betting to ensure that the athletes are not placing wagers, and thus fixing matches in their favor. While this crackdown has only been announced for the Vancouver 2010 Olympics, it can almost be assured that the program will continue into all of the events in years to come.

Be it gambling or even promoting gambling, any athlete caught in the act will be severely punished. Both activities are banned, and the Beijing 2008 Olympics were similarly monitored, but only as of this past Sunday was the International Sports Monitoring established to keep tabs on events.

Over 400 oddsmakers will be monitored under this new system, and the Committee will be looking for irregular trends. While the bets will invariably take place, as they have been for years, it is only going to become an issue if the bets are made in such a way that a proverbial red flag were to be tossed up.

The integrity of all athletes will be reaffirmed throughout the upcoming weeks, as the competitors will all be instructed on the policies in place.

Ironically enough, the Morris Mohawk Gaming Group in Kahnawake, the exclusive Bodog Brand Licensee in the United States, is led by Alwyn Morris, a former Olympic Gold Medalist.
