Gambling News - July 31st, 2009 - Written by Glen

Over the past month, several illegal gambling operations have been busted. Many have made national news, including a high profile case involving a Mafia underboss. As states introduce legalized gambling, others are attempting to take the matter into their own hands by providing different forms of gambling without a license or legal compliance.

Most recently, nine citizens of Haines City, Florida were arrested for illegal gambling operations. Florida is a state writhe in gambling, as Tribal Casinos and Pari-mutuel betting venues are scattered about the state. There are many poker rooms, dog tracks, and even full blown casinos in south Florida, and indeed some in north Florida, for players to use, but these nine were operating an illegal poker ring as well as slot machines. The owner of Amos Tavern, Ernest Amos, was allegedly in charge of the operation.

Over in Salt Lake City, a local business owner was recently charged with running an illegal Internet gambling operation. Frank Musil, 51, was allowing players to gamble within his Internet Cafe. He faces one felony and five misdomeanors for his malfeasence. A detective entered the establishment, purchased "credits" then cashed out his winnings. The scheme was reported to be a Bingo operation.

In Storm Lake, Iowa, a man was arrested for operating an illegal gambling business in his domicile. In addition to gambling records and large amounts of cash, a large amount of methamphetamines were seized. The purpetrator was charged with felonious meth posession as well as operating the gambling ring. Ten other residents were arrested for their involvement with the gambling.

The most prolific case of the month would probably be the indictment Mafia underboss, Carmen DiNunizo. He admitted to extortion charges brought against him. He was allegedly extorting $500 dollars a month from an illegal sportsbook. He is scheduled for sentencing in September, but put in a plea bargin for six years in a federal penitentary.

As gambling continues to increase, it seems unlawful gambling activities are also on the rise. Internet gambling, as well as land gambling, are both under fire from different groups. Internet gambling is on its way to complete legalization, where as major sports leagues are fighting to illegalize sports betting operations that are appearing in Delaware.
